 Information about the Department

In 1971, the “Mountain Reservoirs and Sea Shore Erosion” sector was established, with Dr. Nino Varazashvili, a Candidate of Technical Sciences, appointed as its head.

In 1981, the sector was transformed into the “Laboratory of Mountain Reservoirs and Seas,” with Dr. Nino Varazashvili, a Doctor of Technical Sciences and Professor, appointed as its head.

In 2006, the laboratory was restructured into the “Department of Water Resources and Hydraulic Structures,” and in the same year, Dr. Irina Iordanishvili, a Doctor of Technical Sciences, was elected head through a competitive process.

In 2012, the department was transformed into the “Department of Seas and Reservoirs,” and Dr. Irina Iordanishvili was again elected head of the department through a competitive process. She continues to serve in this role to this day.

Scientific Focus:

For many years, the department’s staff have been engaged in researching the conditions of seas and reservoirs, the geo-ecological state of floating structures, soil and ground properties, and issues related to technical and economic assessments. The staff investigates measures and recommendations aimed at protecting seas, reservoirs, and hydraulic structures from erosion.
