mission of the institute
The institute, which was founded in 1925 and officially registered in 1929, initially focused on conducting scientific research in water management, environmental protection, and land reclamation. Based on the country’s strategic priorities, the institute now works in the following scientific fields:
- Water resource security and integrated management, taking climate change into account;
- Prediction and control of natural disasters;
- Research on modern problems in land reclamation;
- Forecasting issues related to seas and reservoirs;
- Reliability and risk assessment of hydraulic structures;
- Study of erosional processes in agricultural lands.
From 2020 to 2025, the institute is developing a program-funded project titled “Water Resource Security and Integrated Management with Climate Change Consideration.” The research is conducted both in the institute’s hydraulic laboratory and in natural landscapes.
The current goals and mission of the institute are:
- Developing calculation methods for natural disasters (floods, torrents, landslides, snow avalanches, and erosional processes) and designing engineering structures to counter these phenomena;
- Developing innovative wave-dissipating structures for the protection of sensitive coastal zones of seas and reservoirs;
- Assessing and forecasting the sedimentation in reservoirs and the erosion of abrasive shores, considering climate change;
- Developing innovative hydrotechnical and bioengineering measures to prevent slope erosion using local materials;
- Preparing educational and scientific-methodological literature in the field of hydromelioration and enhancing professional education;
- Developing a natural resource cadaster of water and soil for the integrated management of natural resources;
- Preparing international and national grant projects aimed at environmental security, mitigation of natural disasters, and raising ecological awareness among the population;
- Preparing national, EU, and NATO grant projects with the involvement of young scientific staff;
- Developing educational programs aimed at raising professional education and qualifications in agricultural reclamation;
- Preparing scientific-educational and normative documentation for the design of environmental protection structures to ensure the safety of Georgia’s mountainous landscapes and population;
- Establishing international relations through young scientist exchange programs and the preparation and implementation of international grant projects;
- Preparing and commercializing grant projects and business support projects based on the institute’s research infrastructure.
Since 1934, the institute has annually published collections of scientific works. Since 2011, it has also published collections of scientific works from the annual international conferences organized and hosted by the institute, which are assigned both ISSN and DOI numbers.
