The mission of the institute is to conduct research in the fields of water management, environmental protection, and land reclamation. Under the conditions of climate change, its main areas of focus are:
- Water resources management,
- Forecasting and controlling natural disasters,
- Research on issues of the coastal zone,
- Risk assessment and mitigation of hydraulic structures,
- Study of erosion processes.
The institute also actively works on the development of educational projects (educational programs, international events, etc.) aimed at raising public awareness on environmental protection issues.
